October weddings are stunning—cooler temperatures, rich fall colors, and that perfect golden hour glow. But as much as we love the crisp air and cozy vibes, fall weather can also bring some challenges when it comes to making your bridal makeup last all day. Between the dry winds and sudden temperature drops, your skin and makeup need a little extra attention. Don’t worry though! With the right techniques and products, you can keep your bridal look flawless from the first look to the last dance. Here are my top tips for making your bridal makeup last in Chicago’s unpredictable fall weather:
1. Prep, Prep, Prep The foundation of long-lasting makeup is great skin prep, especially in the cooler months. Dry skin can lead to flaky makeup, so it’s essential to hydrate your skin well. I always recommend starting with a rich, hydrating moisturizer that suits your skin type. For brides with oily skin, you’ll still want to hydrate but with a lightweight, oil-free option. Follow it up with a smoothing primer to create a flawless base that keeps makeup locked in place, no matter how the weather changes. This will leave your skin feeling good and your makeup lasting well.
2. Choose Long-Wearing Formulas When it comes to bridal makeup, long-wear products are your best friend. In October, I opt for foundations with a semi-matte or satin finish, which look natural but stay put through all the hugs and happy tears. Since its not as humid we can afford a little glow to the skin, Waterproof formulas are a must for eyeliner and mascara, especially with fall’s chilly winds that can make eyes water (or for those happy tears) . Chicago’s fall weather can go from breezy to brisk in an instant, so using makeup products designed to withstand movement and moisture is key.
3. Layer for Longevity Layering is a technique that really helps makeup last all day. For your base, after applying foundation, we need to lightly set it with a translucent powder, focusing on areas that tend to get oily, like the T-zone. Then, add a setting spray to lock everything in. You might not like to wear a lot of makeup but this combo helps keep your makeup fresh without feeling too heavy. Making it perfect for those unexpected windy moments.
4. Hydration from the Inside Out Cooler weather can be harsh on your skin, leaving it dry and dull. To combat this, I always recommend brides hydrate from the inside out. Drink plenty of water leading up to the big day, and consider using a hydrating facial mist throughout the day to keep your skin looking fresh and dewy. If you’re having an outdoor October wedding in Chicago, your skin will thank you for this extra step!
5. Don’t Forget the Lips Fall’s cool air can dry out your lips fast, so start prepping them days before your wedding. Use a gentle lip scrub to exfoliate any dead skin and follow with a hydrating balm. For the big day, I recommend a long-wearing lipstick formula that won’t dry out your lips. Matte lipsticks are great for longevity, but make sure they’re comfortable and not too drying—adding a little balm throughout the day can help. And always keep your lipstick handy for touch-ups!
As a bridal makeup artist, I know that every bride deserves to feel beautiful, confident, and radiant, no matter what the weather brings. With these fall-proof techniques, you can focus on enjoying your big day, knowing your makeup will look flawless from morning to night. Whether you’re getting married in the city or the suburbs, these tips will keep you glowing through Chicago’s weather. Stay radiant, stay beautiful, and embrace that autumn glow!
