In our ‘Natural Era’

Updated: Jun 23, 2023

Model with makeup from Chicago makeup artist Highlights by Reni

The time has come…we’re moving on from baking our whole face with powder and covering our eyes with a black gel eyeliner. Welcome to the “Natural makeup era”. In this era, we focus on uniqueness and truly enhancing our own features with products rather than loading on everything we find in our makeup bag. I see more and more girls posting pictures with sheer foundation and a skin-like lipstain. Eyebrows are embracing their natural shape again, moving away from the overly filled, overly-defined brows of previous years. The feathery brow look emphasizes your natural brow shape and adds a bit of texture.

Hailey Bieber with makeup

Having been a bridal makeup artist for 4+ years I am constantly looking at my clients' inspiration pictures of the type of makeup (and hair) they dream of having. Before I would often see the same exact picture of that “soft bridal glam” girl with the overly shimmery eyelid, thick black liner and completely full coverage foundation. However, lately I notice the inspiration pictures are changing. The makeup style requests are changing. Everyone (well almost everyone) is hopping on the natural glam band wagon. At this rate, I wonder when filler and botox will go out of trend and then everyone will really be natural (doubt it). Younger women and older women are all requesting a skin-like, makeup-no-makeup look with a monoshade lid and soft brown smudged liner. How do I feel about this? I LOVE it. Don’t get me wrong I love makeup, I want all of the makeup, but I love to use makeup in a way that doesn’t mask who you are. I want to unveil your rareness, not cake it up with the Estee Lauder Double Wear foundation. As a makeup artist, it's not only my job to give you a bright complexion and make your eyes pop out. It's my responsibility to make sure you walk out of my chair feeling confident as ever because you look in the mirror and you see nothing else but you.

Selena Gomez with other models with makeup done by makeup artist

This trend of course began with some influence from well known and loved celebrities like Hailey Bieber (Rhode Skin) and Selena Gomez (Rare Beauty). They didn't just start a makeup line, they started a revolution. They gave makeup a new purpose. Makeup shouldn’t change or manipulate how you look, instead it should bring out what makes you-you. More and more women are embracing their “flaws” and realizing that they are what make them unique and beautiful. Brands are leaving their photos unedited-showing texture, fine lines, stretch marks etc. They are showing the real, not just photoshopped “perfection”.

Makeup line

Some of my favorite natural beauty brands that I live for right now are Merit, Rare beauty, and Saie. All of their products give you that little 'hmph’ of coverage and color without feeling or looking heavy. Merit has by far my favorite cream blushes giving you a sheer color that makes it look like you're truly blushing and a dewy finish as if you just got home from a brisk walk. Rare Beauty- I love all of you, especially your glowy mist. Saie Beauty thank you for creating Super Glowy Gel, the ultimate game changer that can be used anyway and anywhere for that sheer sparkle.

So, don't shy away from showing off your freckles, scars, or wrinkles. Celebrate your unique beauty because the "natural you" is the most beautiful you there can be!
